Prevention is ALWAYS better than a cure!

Here are our 7 top tips to stay away from the common cold this Wintertime;

  1.  Eat warm and nourishing foods, such as soups and stews. Use some warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom and onions, ginger, garlic.
  2. Avoid cold and raw foods, salads, sushi and the like during the colder months of the year.
  3.  Put on a few more layers to protect your body and especially your neck from cold and wind. Carry a cardigan or scarf with you and put it on when needed.
  4.  Find ways to relieve stress – be it by going for a walk, breathwork, meditation a massage.
  5. Exercise regularly but also do not overdo it.
  6.  Get 8+ hours of sleep every night, this is crucial. Chinese medicine recommends going to bed before 11 p.m. according to the organ clock – ensuring the organ’s recovery overnight.
  7.  During the flu season, pathogens are all around. Wash your hands often and use a hand moisturiser. Open the windows and air the rooms in your house regularly.

Oh no! Too late? This is for when it got you!!!

To choose the right remedies, it is important that you know whether your symptoms are cold or hot. While you may feel both chills and fever, which one prevails?

If you are feeling ’more cold’, you may also have body aches, a runny nose (clear discharge) and your throat may be itchy. The best way to turn things around from here is by resting and sweating. To induce sweating, prepare a hot drink with ginger, spring onions and honey. See the recipe below.

Now it’s time to cover up make yourself comfortable in your bed, and sip on your decoction. It will make you sweat while you sleep. Once you feel a little better, you may consider acupuncture to get you back on track.

Ginger-Spring Onion Decoction with Honey

  •  400 ml water
  • 2 cm of fresh ginger with peel, cut into slices
  • Half a bunch of spring onions, white part only, cut in rings
  • 2 teaspoons of honey and/or brown sugar or maple syrup

Add the ginger and spring onion into the water and bring to a boil, simmer for 10-15 minutes without the lid. Strain, add honey or sugar and enjoy while hot.

IMPORTANT:  If you notice that you have increased thirst and perspiration, if you feel hot, and have an obvious feverthen ginger and spring onion are NOT the right remedies.

We recommend you stay in bed and rest, have some peppermint tea, drink enough warm or room temperature water and eat light meals, such as rice congee. Know when you need medical care (extremely high fever or if fever does not subside).
