When you think of gelatin, you might have some childhood memories of Haribo gold bears or shiny, colourful and wobbly jelly desserts.
While gelatin is indeed handy to thicken anything (jellies, gummies, sauces), it is indeed a very potent protein found in animal parts which your body may benefit from. If you are not cooking your sauces and broth from scratch, chances are that your diet does not include skin, bones and connective tissues, which includes essential amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. As this is an animal product, we recommend you choose a grass-fed gelatin, just as you would select your meats to avoid exposure to residues from pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. We tried Locako and NutraOrganics and found them both great choices.
We want to give you some ideas how to easily integrate gelatin in your diet to nourish skin, hair and nails, strengthen your joints and support their gut health.
Skin benefits: As you age your body tends to produce less collagen, a vital element of healthy skin. Gelatin has beneficial effects on human skin physiology (1). The proteins in gelatin improve your skin’s moisture and elasticity, helping to build its own collagen, preventing wrinkles, sagging and sun damage.
Joint benefits: Gelatin promotes healing and resilience in your connective tissues. Supplementing with collagen hydrolysate supports joint health, may reduce joint pain and decreases the risk of joint deterioration (2).
Gut benefits: Gelatin contains glutamic acid which supports a healthy mucosal lining in the gastrointestinal tract and helps your body heal from a leaky gut. It can also aid your gut bacteria, boosting digestion (3).
You need 3 ingredients:
200 ml Fruit/veg juice; add a squeeze of lemon and ginger to your liking
Raw sugar/honey/coconut sugar
Nutra Organics or Locako grass-fed gelatine powder
- Warm up 200ml juice in saucepan on low heat.
- Add about 2 tbsp. of sugar and stir
- Turn off heat and gradually add 3 tbsp. of organic gelatine whilst stirring continuously.
- Strain the liquid through a tea strainer into the silicone moulds
- Put the lollies in the fridge for 3 hours, then press out of moulds and enjoy.
Can be kept in the fridge for up to a week.
- Experiment with vegie and fruit flavours; juice your own! Make it fun!
- We got unicorn, pineapple and cactus moulds from K-mart.
- Use only 1tbsp of gelatine powder/ and make soft jelly instead. Pour it in a glass dish, let it cool down in the fridge and cut it into soft wobbly cubes.
